Our Start-Up Story
We started Southern Insurance Services, Inc. in Chesapeake, Virginia because our founder, Dave Comey, believed that insurance sold well by a corporate broker measuring every marketing call and every expense dollar spent still missed the point. Dave had managed offices for one of the largest national brokers in the country, and while that world taught him plenty about scale, it also taught him what happens to a client when they stop being a name and start being a number. So he left that world behind. We built our agency on a simple idea: if you take care of the customer, the growth and the profit take care of themselves. That idea has carried us through seventeen years in Hampton Roads, and it still shapes every account we write today.
What Makes Us Different
We are a small, commercial-only agency, and we consider that our biggest advantage. We can decide on your renewal, your certificate, or your claims question in the time it takes a larger broker to route it through a home office. We do not put you through a call center. When you call us, you reach the person who knows your account and your staff, and that relationship is what makes it hard for a competitor to pull you away, even when they beat us on price for a year. We tell every prospective client upfront that we will not always be the lowest bid. What we will always be is competitive, consultative, and honest about the tradeoff between price and service. It comes down to a simple promise we hold ourselves to: we do what we say we’re going to do.
Who We Serve
Southern Insurance Services, Inc. is led by Dave Comey, our principal, and Justin Comey, our agent, alongside a four-person team that handles every account personally rather than passing clients through a rotating cast of service reps. We are a commercial-only agency, focused on small, mid-market, and larger businesses across Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Suffolk, along with clients we serve in other states. Our lines of business include general liability, workers’ compensation, and cyber liability, along with builders risk, contractors equipment, professional liability, marine and maritime, commercial flood, and special events coverage. We do not write personal lines, and we built our new site around that focus so the businesses we serve best can find us.
Rooted in Hampton Roads
We are proud to call Hampton Roads home, and our roots in Chesapeake run seventeen years deep. We built Southern Insurance Services, Inc. to be a local resource first, a place business owners in our community can call when they need real answers rather than an automated menu. As we grow, we look forward to sharing more of the local partnerships and involvement that make our agency part of this community, not just a vendor in it.
